Take Ten with Team HPNE: Meet Mike Giuliano
We recently sat down with Mike Giuliano, our Fluid Products manager, to talk about his role and experiences as a tenured member of #TeamHPNE.
How long have you been a member of #TeamHPNE, and how would you say the company has grown in that time?
I’ve been at High Purity New England for 12 years now. I would not have believed someone then if they had told me we would have multiple buildings, labs, cleanrooms, training facilities, and a Chief Scientific Officer. Between new products and expansions we currently have in the works, I am thrilled to see how HPNE will continue to grow in the future.
In your opinion, what factors do you believe have been the key to the growth of HPNE?
The people - from the first five team members to the talented industry veterans we have brought in over the years. With new people comes fresh ideas allowing us to continue innovating and developing our offerings while maintaining our mission of supporting the customers evolving needs.
I’ve also gotten to see multiple products come to fruition from only a small idea to a fully formed product line. However, as we have grown, we have never added new products for the sake of having new products, we have always focused on innovation within the industry and creating tomorrow's solutions.
Could you describe a typical day as a Product Manager?
A day in the life of a product manager is never the same. I have the opportunity to work with a variety of people, and each of their processes are different. Most of my day consists of taking calls and collaborating with customers to find out what combination of single-use assemblies, pumps, and storage and handling solutions are needed to create the best solutions for their process.
What I do differs so much daily because I work with such dynamic products. Our pumps not only pump liquid, but can measure pressure as well as support many specific applications through their many specific features. This product diversity means the application of the pump differs greatly depending on the customer. For example, one customer I am working with needed to be able to handle large volumes, and monitor the pressure of their fluid in real time. All of our FlowMaxx pumps feature pressure measurement, but their volume requirement allowed me to determine that the FlowMaxx Pro 2500 Quaternary Pump would be the perfect fit for them. It was fulfilling to know that my knowledge helped the customer make the right decision to upgrade their processes. Every process is unique, and the solutions we provide are too.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
What I like the most about my role is interacting with customers that I have really come to know well over the years as well as meeting new people that I can help through HPNE’s offerings. Despite having been in the industry for so long, I continue to learn through our customers and evolve with the industry.
You’ve mentioned that you have seen many new products come out during your time at HPNE. What product launch were you most excited for?
I was most excited for the launch of the FlowMaxx and the FlowMaxx Pro Smart Pumps. In the early development of the product line, we were making our FlowMaxx with another company, but after some strategic pivots, we were able to begin producing the pump in-house. Through additional manufacturing and engineering teams, we were then able to launch the next generation pump, The FlowMaxx Pro.
While I was most excited for the FlowMaxx because it was a product line I represented, one product I was able to work indirectly on what was OptiMaxx. Not only did I get to work with many great #TeamHPNE members, but I got to help release a product that is incredibly versatile, and most importantly comes in HPNE orange! The multitude of product applications including ultrafiltration and diafiltration, makes OptiMaxx a crucial piece in our portfolio of solutions.
While working at HPNE, what has been your “Superpower”?
My memory may not be photographic, but I can remember many things that I only encountered, read, or worked on once. A lot of what I remember is random facts, but a good example is that I still remember original HPNE part numbers that we would never use anymore. Out of the 12,000+ part numbers that we have, I can probably name about 2,000 of them!
Throughout your time at HPNE, what have you been most proud of, whether personally or professionally?
Professionally, I’m most proud of having my name on a patent for a TFF system that we worked on with Catapult. It was an incredibly unique experience that I am proud to have been a part of.
Personally, I am most proud of being a dad.
Outside of work, what do you like to do for fun?
Outside of HPNE, I play volleyball in a local league and enjoy going hiking. I also coach soccer and tee-ball for both of my kids, which is a lot of fun! We love building LEGOs together, and recently visited Legoland.
