Promoting Wellness at HPNE

In honor of National Wellness Month, we are taking time to highlight the ways in which we try to promote wellness at High Purity New England, a Getinge Company.

Table of Contents

Throughout August, we celebrate National Wellness Month, a time to take a step back and reflect on our mental, emotional, and physical health. Through this reflection, the goal is to find areas we are succeeding in, as well as aspects of our lives we could make changes to in order to improve our overall well-being. Wellness is defined by Merriam-Webster dictionary as “the quality or state of being in good health especially as an actively sought goal”.

At High Purity New England, we strive to create an environment that is conducive to our employees maintaining their personal wellness, whatever that may mean to them. As individual definitions of wellness may vary, we try to provide a wide range of opportunities that touch upon different lifestyle categories. We reflect on some of those below.

Sharing Culture and Culinary Expertise with a Cookbook

This month, our employees are working together to create a cookbook that includes hearty and healthy recipes, which will be distributed to all employees at the end of the year. Our hope is that this project will not only expand employees' culinary possibilities, but that it will expose them to cultures through food that they might not currently have a lot of exposure to. According to the International Cultural Exchange Services, exploring various cultures can be a powerful tool for improving mental well-being.

Financial Literacy Workshop

Our employee resources group (ERG) the Women of HPNE hosted a financial literacy workshop in June. This workshop included multiple stations, where #TeamHPNE members were able to learn about a range of topics including planning for retirement, credit scores, budgeting, as well as loans & savings goals. In addition to learning new strategies and facts about finances, attendees also had the opportunity to network, providing an opportunity for a boost in social wellness. All attendees left with additional resources for any further research they wanted to do on their own regarding any of the topics covered.

Providing Opportunities to Build Community

As mentioned above, HPNE was excited to found their first company ERG, the Women of HPNE this year. The group has been able to provide a source of community for many women on the staff. For a deep dive on the positive effects of an ERG on the company environment, you can visit our previous article about the group's event held to celebrate Women’s History Month. In addition to our on-site ERG, as a proud Getinge company, our employees also have access to the various virtual ERG’s led by the Getinge team.

Studies have found that finding a sense of belonging in the workplace, whether through day-to-day interaction or through ERG’s like those listed above, can help improve overall well-being and mental health. Additionally, it can help reduce feelings of isolation, increase engagement, and increase motivation.

Celebrating Other Wellness Holidays

In addition to National Wellness Month, HPNE also celebrated National Exercise Day, which was observed on April 18th. While acknowledging that exercise is a personal journey, HPNE provided a simple movement option for the day for any employees who chose to participate in the holiday. A map was created of a local walking loop that is accessible from any of our locations for any employees who were unaware of it and were interested to learn more.

According to the Department of Health & Human Services Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, adults are recommended to get at least 2 hours and 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week. Our hope was that this may provide an option of a way to get some of that movement in during breaks throughout the workday.
