Our Major Takeaways from the 2024 BPSA Single-Use Summit

This year, members of the High Purity New England team attended the three day Bio-Process Systems Alliance Single-Use Summit — here is what they learned.

What is Bio-Process Systems Alliance (BPSA)?

The Bio-Process Systems Alliance (BPSA) is an international industry association with a focus on accelerating and encouraging the adoption of single-use manufacturing technologies within biopharmaceuticals and vaccine production.

Formed in 2005, BPSA offers a variety of resources for members regarding the advancement of single-use technologies across topics such as cell & gene therapy, benchmarking, particulates, and more. HPNE’s own Matt Sitcoske, Director of Sales, is a member of the BPSA Board of Directors.

The 2024 BPSA Single-Use Summit

This year's event marks the eleventh annual BPSA International Single-Use Summit. Held in Washington D.C., the summit consisted of membership meetings, networking, plenary sessions, presentations and more for the single-use biopharmaceutical industry. Topics covered in the presentations included x-ray sterilization, the opportunities and obstacles of single-use in cell & gene therapy, economic outlooks, PFAS and material management, as well as other key findings for industry relevant topics.

What Our Team Learned

Many of our employees in attendance first commented on how the conference highlighted the major ability for growth in global single-use bioprocessing. According to an article by Biospace, the market is projected to reach $128.24 billion by 2033, and experience a CAGR of 16.25 from this year to 2033. During the economic outlook and trends presentation of the conference, it was also revealed that concerns regarding supply chain security are down 14%.

Our team was also able to get a refresher on the Biomedical Advanced Research and Developmental Authority (BARDA) Grant, which High Purity New England was awarded in 2022 to expand manufacturing of single-use solutions. The BARDA Grant has the mission of getting innovative solutions to the patients who need them in order to save lives, and to respond to 21st century health and health security threats.

The conference also included discussions around regulatory bodies in the industry. All of our #TeamHPNE members in attendance are familiar with industry regulations, especially our Director of Quality and Regulatory Compliance Shannon Flanagan, who ensures all of our products meet the necessary requirements on a day to day basis. However, they expressed that it was nice to see a recap of standards, broken down into regulators, industry standards, and industry associations and groups of interest as it related to BPSA and other organizations we have worked with such as BioPhorum and ISPE.

“I learned a lot about market trends regarding the financial outlook for our industry. It was nice to see that it is trending in a positive direction post covid inflations from years past,” stated Matt Sitcoske, Director of Sales. “I also learned more about the challenges that companies are experiencing with cell and gene therapy development and production.”
