What are Bioprocess Flow Sensors?

Achieving optimal yields and consistent quality in bioprocessing hinges on precise control, and a range of sensors can contribute to this goal. Bioprocess flow sensors are devices that regulate and monitor the flow of gases and liquids within various biological processes. In today’s article, we discuss flow sensors, as well as some of our flow sensor offerings, and information of which sensor may be the best fit for you.

Non-Invasive Ultrasonic Flow Sensor

Non-Invasive Ultrasonic Flow Sensor

In a convenient, compact size to save space, our Non-Invasive Ultrasonic Flow Sensor from PSG Biotech provides intuitive and active flow measurement for use in biopharmaceutical processing. It comes pre-calibrated, meaning there is no need for recalibration or priming. The single sensor contains the ability to use 7 different calibration tables.

To avoid media contact, the transducer encloses flexible tubing with a simple click closure for user-friendly, non-invasive measurement. This ensures that there is no additional shear stress on cells. Our Non-Invasive Ultrasonic Flow Sensor is easy-to-clean, water proof, and has a disinfectable surface.

Non-Invasive Ultrasonic Flow Sensor is Right for You if You…

  • Are pursuing applications in chromatography, harvest, filtration, filling, process evaluation, research, upstream, and downstream bioprocessing
  • Need a non-invasive, no product contact, flow measurement tool
  • Want to easily integrate a flow sensor into your process
  • Would like accurate and stable measurement
  • Need size options for a wide variety of tubing sizes
  • Are looking to save space with a compact flow sensor design

Electromagnetic Flow Sensor

Electromagnetic Flow Sensor

Streamline your bioprocessing with our Electromagnetic Flow Sensor from Krohne, which is designed to have minimal hold-up volume. The flow tubes of the sensor provide the volumetric flow rate of the fluid being measured. It is available in a variety of sizes, and can accommodate both autoclave stable and gamma stable flow tubes.

Our Electromagnetic Flow Sensor comes factory calibrated, saving you and your team time with no need for recalibration. All wetted parts of the flow sensor are made from polysulfone material, and the sensor guarantees accuracy within 1% of measured value.

Electromagnetic Flow Sensor is Right for You if You…

  • Would like a flow sensor with minimal hold-up volume — full-bore with no obstruction
  • Need a flow tube size of ¼”, ⅜-½”, or ¾-1”
  • Require flow measurement in applications such as diafiltration, TFF, virus filtration, process development, research, harvesting, sterile filtration, perfusion, fill & finish, chromatography, or nano filtration
  • Want to avoid the need to recalibrate
  • Would like to achieve accuracy within +/- 1% of measured value

BioProTT Flow SU System

BioProTT Flow Sensor SU System

Simplify the flow measurement process in your single-use biopharma applications with our BioProTT Flow SU System from PSG Biotech. With smart connection and seamless integration, the Flow System can be easily exchanged from your system without the need for complicated tools. It features ultrasonic technology, which allows for air-in-line detection and accurate flow measurement.

Only one cable is needed to get accurate measurement from our BioProTT Flow SU System once it is connected to the holder. It is available in a range of sizes to fit a variety of bioprocess applications. It is manufactured with USP Class VI material, and ultimately provides less shear stress.

BioProTT Flow SU System is Right for You if You…

  • Require a flow sensor in applications including processes requiring sterility in the lines, single-use systems, automated processes, processes sensitive to shearing effects, and processes utilizing flexible tubing
  • Need a flow sensor with a shelf life of up to 24 months after gamma stabilization
  • Are looking for a 2-in-1 solution for both air-in-line detection and flow measurement
  • Want seamless integration of your flow sensor into new and existing systems with no additional tools required
  • Require a high level of features and a low level of maintenance in your flow sensors
  • Need an ultrasonic flow sensor

SumoFlo 8100 Single-Use Coriolis Flow Sensor

Coriolis Flow Sensor

Specially designed for the measurement of liquids that require all gamma stable wetted surfaces, our SumoFlo 8100 Single-Use Coriolis Flow Sensor from PSG Biotech is unaffected by variations of velocity profile or flow regime. All fluid contacting surfaces of the sensor are made of unreinforced polyether ether ketone (PEEK) that meets USP Class VI, USP 788, and USP 661 standards.

Our gamma stable PEEK sensor provides accuracy within 1% of measured value. The flow measurement has the unique approach of measuring the relative motion of vibrating flow sensitive elements, making the sensor’s response immune to the fluid’s physical and chemical properties.

SumoFlo 8100 is Right for You if You…

  • Need a maximum operating pressure of 80 psig
  • Require a flow sensor for a range of applications including virus filtration, chromatography, TFF, depth filtration, measuring fluids with varying viscosity or density, or pure water and ultra high purity chemicals
  • Are looking for a flow sensor with USP Class VI wetted parts
  • Need fluid measurement to be independent from fluid properties
  • Want to measure liquids using all gamma stable wetted surfaces
  • Need a low flow option down to 0.002kg/min in your flow sensor

Single-Use PVDF Turbine Flow Sensor

Untitled design (13)

Quickly exchange your flow tubes and streamline your bioprocessing with our Single-Use PVDF Turbine Flow Sensor from Equflow. Featuring low flow capacities, high resolution square wave output, and gamma radiation resistance up to 50kGy, the flow sensor produces an accurate pulse signal.

There are two models of the flow sensor available, including a clip mount and tube holder. They have been designed specifically for the fast exchange of flow tubes in single-use applications. It features accuracy within 3%, and repeatability of <0.15%. Our PVDF Turbine Flow Sensor meets all the requirements of the USP Class VI.

Single-Use PVDF Turbine Flow Sensor is Right for You if You…

  • Want the ability to quickly exchange your single-use flow tubes
  • Are interested in a flow tube that can be autoclaved up to 140º C
  • Need something suitable for opaque liquids
