What is ISPE?
Founded in 1980, the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering (ISPE) is a global industry leader, who strives to deliver operational excellence, innovation, and regulatory insights to industry professionals in order to enhance the biotech and biopharma industries. They currently have over 21,000 members across 120 countries. Ultimately, they aim to utilize the expertise and innovation of their members and other resources to tackle complex challenges plaguing the pharmaceutical industry and provide useful solutions.
What is the ISPE Boston Product Show?
With members across so many locations, ISPE hosts multiple events worldwide throughout the year to provide the opportunity for biotech and biopharma organizations to showcase their latest technological developments and discoveries. The ISPE Boston Product Show is held at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough Massachusetts, and occurs on an annual basis. The show has run for 32 years, and HPNE has been present at over 20 of those events.
Out of all chapters within ISPE, the ISPE Boston Area Chapter is the most active, and largest. This is likely attributed to the biotech and biopharma hubs located in Cambridge, Massachusetts and surrounding areas. There are over 1,700 New England technical professionals within the Boston Area Chapter.
The product show showcased over 400 exhibitors, as well as a career fair, and keynote speaker sessions. Attendees are encouraged to walk around the stadium to network, and learn more about the products, services, and developments of the exhibiting organizations. It was reported that over 4,200 attendees were present at this year's event.
Our Team’s Takeaways
Throughout the day, our team not only provided attendees with helpful information regarding our innovative product portfolio and services, but also got the opportunity to walk the event and see the booths of other organizations. By observing new technologies, talking to professionals at other booths, and networking, #TeamHPNE walked away with a few major takeaways about growing and up-and-coming technologies.
AI for Drug Discovery and Development
As we have previously discussed in our article “The Effect of Artificial Intelligence on Biopharma”, the presence of artificial intelligence (AI) in the R&D and drug discovery processes is becoming more and more common.
Through talking with other attendees, our team members learned more about the direct implications of AI and machine learning (ML) to effectively and efficiently find drug targets to test during the discovery phase of the drug development process. Additionally, the technology is being used to analyze large bodies of data to find trends, and automate tasks, which helps save organizations time and money.
Cell & Gene Therapies and mRNA
When talking to anyone in the biotech and biopharma space, it is hard to avoid conversation about the advancements of cell & gene therapy and mRNA. Within recent history, many new groups and organizations have popped up for cell & gene therapy professionals, such as The CGT Circle, ASGCT, and the International Society for Cell & Gene Therapy. Many HPNE sales team members even have personal ties to these organizations, or are members themselves.
Cell & gene therapy and mRNA have revolutionized the way we view pharmaceutical solutions for improving human quality of life. Our team was impressed how many of the new technologies we are starting to see within the biotech industry are built to cater toward cell & gene therapy drug development.
These conversations also sparked talk of how our HPConnexx™ Single-Use Assemblies can be optimized to fit any cell & gene therapy process. With one of our assemblies on display at our booth, our team was able to have many fulfilling conversations about how HPConnexx™ can be a helpful, adaptable, and scalable solution to your bioprocessing challenges.
Additional Events on the Horizon for HPNE
We will be hosting a panelist and networking event alongside The CGT Circle this month on Thursday, October 24th in Research Triangle Park. The discussion will be between Susan Nichols, CEO of Propel Biosciences, and Heather Pruvis, Director of Clinical Operations at Title21 Solutions. Food and drink will be provided, and the event will be held at the North Carolina Biotechnology Center (NCBC).
Our next large-scale trade show will take place next year at Interphex 2025, which will be held at the Javits Center in New York City, New York. We will be attending alongside Getinge, our parent company. In the meantime, we will also be attending smaller tabletop shows.
