Celebrating Black History Month
To close out Black History Month, HPNE supports a Black-owned business and reflects on the impact of Black professionals on the biotech industry.
From Alice Ball to Dr. Percy Julian, the current biotechnology and biopharma industry could not have grown to where it is now without the innovation and discoveries made by Black trailblazers.
This month, we celebrate Black History month. Although it is important to recognize the impact Black individuals have had specifically on our industry, we also take this month to recognize the impact the community has had on American society as a whole.
Our company beliefs and values at HPNE are of an enriched work environment created by employees of diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds make it a priority for us to recognize and celebrate Black History Month.
The origins of Black History month date back to 1925, when it was instead celebrated for just a week in February - the week encapsulating both Abraham Lincoln and Fredrick Douglas’s birthdays. It was not until 1976 that it was declared a national month by President Gerald Ford, and is now observed annually in the United States and Canada.
To celebrate, this week at High Purity New England, employees enjoyed a lunch of Jamaican Patties from Ja Patty, a Black-owned food truck company that has been feeding residents of Rhode Island and beyond since 2018.
