Take Ten with Team HPNE: Meet Emily Peterson
We recently sat down with Emily Peterson, our new Business Development Manager of our OptiMaxx TFF systems, to talk about her career, her role, and her product line.
What has your career looked like over the years?
Well, my first job out of school was at a chemical processing plant for cotton for about a year, and then I moved into the biopharmaceutical industry. From there, I started in R&D working with Normal Flow Filtration (NFF) devices, then moved into membrane manufacturing as a process engineer for 6 years. After membrane manufacturing, I did Lean Six-Sigma process improvement for a little while, then back into R&D and ran a validation lab. Shortly after, I moved into the MSAT group where I specialized in Tangential Flow Filtration (TFF) working closely with customers, which included all different kinds of support from bench-scale to manufacturing; I did this for 6 or 7 years. I later joined continuous manufacturing, specializing in software for continuous manufacturing. After over 22 years in the industry, I came to High Purity New England!
Wow! You’ve had quite the career, Emily! What made you want to get involved with HPNE?
I was really looking for a change. Although working for a large company has its benefits, you hit certain limits. Occasionally, you’re either waiting for someone to retire or opportunities for growth just aren't there; you get to that certain point in your career where you can't expand any further. I also really loved the TFF side of things and wanted to get into sales. This role is a perfect opportunity to do both.
What is your new role going to look like?
I’m the Business Development Manager for OptiMaxx, which is a new product we have recently launched. I’ll be driving the OptiMaxx business, growing that line and helping HPNE reach new heights. It goes beyond just selling equipment to our end users, though. It’s more-so about figuring out our customers’ pain points, strategizing how to optimize their processes, and providing unique solutions to alleviate their challenges; I like to think of myself as a problem solver, in a sense.
OptiMaxx? Can you tell us a little bit about the new product?
Of course! So OptiMaxx is our brand new TFF purification system with a completely open architecture, allowing it to be truly customized to the end-user’s needs. We currently offer four different sizes, each of which have the same recipe inputs and scale with volume. The product comes equipped with many pre-programmed ultrafiltration and diafiltration (UF/DF) phases, and can be tailored to our customers’ unique applications, which is something I really love about the system.
Aside from OptiMaxx, what are you most excited for?
I’m really looking forward to growing the business around our TFF Systems. I’m excited to be working with customers again, helping them overcome their obstacles, and above all, getting them what they need. I’m also looking forward to combining the pre-existing strengths of HPNE, such as our HPConnexx® custom single-use assemblies, with our new, innovative solutions, like OptiMaxx and our lab-scale screening system, MicroMaxx.
Who inspires you, personally and/or professionally?
I’m constantly inspired by my children. I’m always trying to give them a good mentor to look up to. I’m also inspired by people that pursue what they genuinely love to do. It doesn’t matter if it gets them a million dollars, fame, or glory; as long as they’re happy and love what they do, I think that’s truly inspirational.
